Every year our NW Laurel hedges look dishevelled and wild.

The laurel is often used as a hedge or barrier, but the true nature of the laurel is to be a tree.  Leyland Cypress and Taxus (Yew) are trees that can also be trained to create a hedge. Some Laurels put out white flowers and have berries. The berries are reference as ‘cherries’ and the seeds in the cherries are poisonous. They are great for sound barriers, privacy and adding formality to any landscape. They are known for being tough and able to grow in difficult growing conditions (shade, bad soil, dry conditions). For this reason, they have been deemed an invasive species and will take over if not controlled.

The growing season is from late March to July 31. To keep laurels in-check, some people trim in late May and then again in September. Most people, including myself, trim them 1x each August or September.  Regardless of the time you choose to hedge you want to make sure to stay on top of any hedges, and get them pruned back annually.  Hedges that are left to grow out of their shape will be much harder to get back into more manageable shapes and sometimes not at all.  So make sure if you have a hedge that you can give it the proper maintenance over time to ensure a healthy, green barrier that will last you for some time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
